Lucia & Christmas Dinner

Week 18:

Hello! This last week had a bit more happen in it so my post will be a bit more exciting.

Lucia is celebrated on the 13th of December in Sweden. I have been told that she is the person who brings light since it is always so dark this time of the year. So she brings light to brighten things up...(I guess). Usually they pick a Lucia and she usually is blonde. Then her tärnor are the girls that follow her. There can also be guys that follow her and they are called stjärngoaar (I am getting this off of a website so if it is not right I am only partly responsible). So,Friday at school we had a Lucia celebration. We had an hour long celebration in the Assembly hall which involved Lucia and the people that follow her singing pretty much the whole celebration.  Following the celebration we went over to the Cafeteria and had fika. This was pretty neat to experience and a highlight for the week.

Also at Innebandy practice there was a little entertainment! Thursday we were practicing and had the full team and I hit (hit=body check) a guy in the corner. Not bad, I mainly just rubbed him out to get the ball. But then we were in their end and they got the ball from us and a guy was looking back to receive the pass.  When he got the pass he met me when he turned his head back around. It was a good clean hit and he did not like it that much but sometimes you just have to play the Canadian way. Then on the Sunday we had another Innebandy game. We played Sala in Sala. When we got to the arena and there were two police officers there. Andreas said it was because we where in the ghettos. I would say it was a better looking ghetto then America.  After the game when I was going out to the van they told me to be careful because I might get shot because Sweden has so many guns over here! Anyways, we actually lost that game 11-7.  I would say we played shitty defensively. That is only my opinion!

Saturday night I actually got to have a traditional Swedish Christmas dinner. I went with the Nilsson's because they will not be here for Christmas as they are in Florida for the break. We brought Grandpa (Åsa's dad) with us and also there was Tomas, Åsa, Maja and myself. There were some interesting foods, like the cured fish. I was not going to give that a try since I did not think it looked safe to eat, haha! However, I did have salmon caviar (caviar=fish eggs) on top of a square with the middle made of cream cheese and salmon (if I had to guess) and bread on the bottom. I quickly realized this was not my thing after I tried it, it did not taste so good. So I stuck with the usual ham, ribs and meatballs and for me that was good enough!

This wraps up week 18 and there are pictures and videos below of Lucia. Next week you might learn about some of my friends I have over here. But I am not sure yet......
How Lucia looks. The girl with the candles on her head is Lucia
